Ahead of Parl session, Govt meets Opposition to seek support for GST
New Delhi, Nov 25 (IBNS): In a fresh bid to garner support for its crucial reform, the Goods and Services Tax (GST) bill, the government on Wednesday reached out to the Oppositions at an all political parties' meeting.
The meeting comes just a day before the Parliament convenes for the winter session.
Speaking at the meeting, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said, "People have great expectations and that is why Parliament should function and be productive."
Modi is hopeful of rolling out GST in 2016.
Earlier in the day, leaders of the ruling BJP and its partners in the National Democratic Alliance met to finalise their strategy before meeting opposition parties.
The GST bill has been blocked in Parliament by the opposition Congress which has demanded key changes in it.
If reports are to be believed, the government has said it is ready to speak directly to Congress chief Sonia Gandhi to seek support for the GST bill.
