After Kiren Rijiju says Sonia Gandhi-George Soros allegations 'serious', Congress refutes

New Delhi/IBNS: The Congress has strongly reacted after union minister Kiren Rijiju on Monday said the allegations against Congress veteran Sonia Gandhi for having ties with Hungarian-American businessman George Soros are "serious".

Speaking to ANI, Congress MP Karti Chidambaram said, "These kinds of theories have no place in serious political discourse...These kinds of deep state theories must be dismissed."

Rijiju, the parliamentary affairs minister, on Monday said, "From the report and information available in the public domain, I can say the allegations are serious. We all know George Soros foundation is one of those bodies that work against India.

"Be it a party or an individual MP or just a citizen, we all should be fighting against anti-India forces. My only appeal is to fight against anti-India forces unitedly."

The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Sunday accused Sonia, a former Congress president, of having ties to an organisation funded by the George Soros Foundation, which has supported the idea of Kashmir as an independent nation.

The ruling party claimed in a series of posts on X that this connection reflects the influence of foreign entities on India’s domestic matters.

Amid these allegations, BJP MP Nishikant Dubey announced plans to question Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi in the Lok Sabha. Dubey accused the Organized Crime and Corruption Reporting Project (OCCRP) and Hungarian-American businessman George Soros of conspiring with the Opposition to undermine India’s economy and tarnish the Modi government’s image.

The BJP stated that Sonia Gandhi, as co-president of the Forum of the Democratic Leaders in Asia Pacific (FDL-AP) Foundation, is linked to an organization financed by the Soros Foundation.

"Notably, the FDL-AP Foundation has expressed views treating Kashmir as a separate entity," the party alleged.

"This association between Sonia Gandhi and an organization that has supported the idea of Kashmir as an independent nation underscores the influence of foreign entities on India’s internal affairs and the political ramifications of such ties," the BJP added.

The party also claimed that the Rajiv Gandhi Foundation, under Sonia Gandhi’s chairmanship, partnered with the Soros Foundation, "demonstrating the impact of foreign funding on Indian organizations."
