After Kerala, now Punjab Assembly passes resolution against CAA
Chandigarh/IBNS: After Kerala, the Punjab Assembly on Friday passed a resolution against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) via a voice vote.
The resolution was passed on the last day of the two-day special session of the Assembly.
The resolution was introduced in the house by Local bodies and Parliamentary affairs minister Brahm Mohindra.
The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) supported the resolution, while the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) opposed it, reported The Tribune.
Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh tweeted: "I have sworn on the Constitution & I will continue to fulfill my duty as a loyal soldier. Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji had said 'Na koi Hindu, Na Mussalman' & it is in this spirit, Punjab Vidhan Sabha passed the resolution to appeal to Central Govt to repeal #CAA for India's interest."
Punjab is now the second state after Kerala to move a resolution against the CAA in the state assembly.
Triggering protests across the country, the Indian government passed the CAA last year.
The Union Home Minister last week issued a notification of the CAA effective from Jan 10.
The CAA will grant citizenship to Hindu, Sikh, Christian, Buddhist, Parsi, Jain but not Muslim refugees who came to India from Bangladesh, Pakistan and Afghanistan before 2015.
