Activists arrest: Police produce documents, expose plans to overthrow PM Narendra Modi-led govt

Pune, Aug 31 (IBNS): The Pune Police on Friday produced evidence, which included several documents, that established their claims that the recently arrested activists have links with Maoists.

The police disclosed documents which revealed about communications between arrested individuals and central committee regarding a purchase of weapons and grenades in a bid to 'end Modi Raj'.

The Pune Police on Friday addressed a press conference amid wide-ranging protests and criticisms across the nation over the arrest of several activists from different parts of the country this week.

Param Bir Singh, Additional Director General, Maharashtra Police told media: "We have thousands of letters which show how these people were involved in the underground movement, how students from Jawaharlal Nehru University were being mobilised to overthrow the elected government."

"All these letters just make the Maoists links clearer," he said.

Singh also claimed that a letter found by them, which was exchanged between the arrested activists, spoke of planning "another Rajiv Gandhi-like incident to end Modi-raj".

"A letter written from Delhi-based activist Rona Wilson to Maoist leader Prakash on July 30, 2017, spoke of requirement of Rs. 8 crore for grenade launchers with four lakh rounds",  Singh said.

Meanwhile, as per the Supreme Court directions, activist Varavara Rao, lawyer Sudha Bharadwaj, activists Arun Fereira, Gautam Navlakha and Vernon Gonsalves, have been put under house arrest for the past few days.

The activists were arrested by the Pune Police during multi-city raids on Tuesday in connection with the Dalit-upper caste violence in Bhima Koregaon in January this year, triggering strong reactions from the critics of the BJP-led government at the centre.

The raids were carried out in several cities like Delhi, Faridabad, Goa, Mumbai, Ranchi and Hyderabad.
