Aarey trees cutting: Contractor, officials concerned booked

| @indiablooms | Nov 30, 2019, at 06:48 pm

Thane/UNI: The controversial felling of Aarey trees on the proposed Metro IV route has now been registered as an offence committed by the contractor and concerned officials of the Thane civic body.

Following the directive of the City Mayor Naresh Mhaske, the Naupada Police here on Saturday registered offence against the contractor and MMRDA officials for chopping off trees on the Metro IV route.

Among the initial works done by the newly sworn-in Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray was staying the work of felling trees for the proposed Metro Car shed at Aarey- the green lungs of Mumbai.

Following his suit, Mayor Mhaske penned a letter to the Deputy Commissioner (Tree Protection), in which he ordered to file criminal complaints against the contractor and the erring officials of the Thane civic body.

In the letter, he said although the Bombay High Court has banned cutting of trees, the order was not followed in spirit and the trees on the Metro route IV were being cut in darkness.

Hence, the contractor and concerned officials have been booked under The Maharashtra (Urban Areas) Protection and Preservation of Trees Act, 1975.

The action of the mayor comes in the wake of the numerous complaints he received from the citizens and the NGOs opposing such indiscriminate cutting of trees.
