AAP accuses BJP of influencing 'vote-from-home' exercise for elderly; poll body clarifies

New Delhi: Hours after the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) accused BJP workers of accompanying poll officials during the 'vote-from-home' exercise for elderly voters, the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) of Delhi issued a statement clarifying that representatives of all political parties are allowed to join these visits.

AAP shared a video on X, purportedly showing an elderly woman recounting her experience of the home voting process, where she alleged BJP members were present with the poll officials.

The party claimed the BJP, with the Election Commission’s support, was undermining democracy in Delhi.

"The Election Commission is now openly with the BJP. This is very dangerous for Indian democracy," AAP wrote.

In response, Chief Electoral Officer R Alice Vaz addressed the allegations, highlighting that the 'vote-from-home' facility aims to assist voters above 85 years old and persons with disabilities (PwD).

"Candidates of all parties or their authorised representatives are permitted to accompany polling teams," the CEO clarified, NDTV reported.

As per the rule, the election officials and security personnel visited approved voters’ homes before the official polling date of February 5, 2025.

As of now, 1,271 senior citizens and 120 PwD voters have used this facility out of 7,505 approved applications.

The CEO emphasised that the exercise follows ballot voting, conducted confidentially and transparently, with the entire process videographed.

Additionally, voters opting for this service cannot vote at polling stations on election day.

"This initiative ensures inclusive voting, enabling senior citizens and PwD voters to participate in the electoral process with ease," the CEO’s statement read.

The office reaffirmed its commitment to adhering to Election Commission guidelines to ensure free and fair elections.

In case of concerns, voters are encouraged to contact their local Returning Officer (RO), District Election Officer (DEO), or call the helpline at 1950.
