81.96% polling recorded in second phase poll in Assam till 5 pm
According to the Election Commission of India (ECI) report, around 81.96 percent polling was recorded in second phase poll in the state till 5 pm.
Assam Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) Vijayendra said that it should cross 84 percent and it will break all records.
In last assembly election in the state the total turnout was 75.94 percent and in the Lok Sabha polls in 2014 it was 80.21 percent.
Large numbers of voters are still waiting in several polling stations to cast their votes.
Former Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh, the Rajya Sabha MP from Assam since 1991, cast his ballot at Dispur Government HS School under Dispur assembly constituency.
The second phase poll was held in 14 constituencies in Central Assam and 47 in Lower Assam.
82.20 percent polling was recorded in first phase poll in 65 constituencies was held on Apr 4.
“People wants change this time and we hope the BJP alliance will form the next government in the state,” BJP leader Sarbananda Sonowal said.
BJP’s ally Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) president Atul Bora said that after high turnout in both phases it reflected that people of Assam wants to see change this time in the state.
On the other hand, Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi said that large voters’ turnout in the Assembly Election in Assam is a good sign of democracy.
Gogoi also said that the large scale popular participation is an indicative of the people’s interests for shaping their own destiny which is one of the tenets of healthy democracy.
Gogoi said that large voters’ turn-out indicates growing conscious of the people of the state.
The Assam CM thanked people of Assam for their spontaneous participation in the electoral process.
Gogoi also attributed the large turnout to a sound and changed academic atmosphere and development of education scenario in the State during the last 15 years.
The Assam CM also acknowledged the role media for growing voters’ turn-out in the State in the Assembly Elections- 2016.
The result of the state assembly poll will be declared on May 19.
