44 pc polling in Nagaland and 40 in AMeghalaya in bypolls till 11 am

Kohima (Nagaland) /Ampati (Meghalaya), May 28 (IBNS)  : An average 42 percent of the electorate have voted till 11 am as polling  is underway for byelectios to  Nagaland Lok Sabha and Ampati assembly (Meghalaya) seats on Monday.

According to reports, 44 percent polling has been  recorded in Nagaland Lok Sabha constituency and  40 percent in Ampati in the first four hours.

The polling started at 7 am.

Voters and polling officials have a tough time fighting the scorching sun.

Nothing untwoard has been reported so far from either of the two constituencies.

Over 11.97 lakh voters will exercise their franchise in the Lok Sabha byelection in Nagaland.

The LS bypoll was necessitated after NDPP leader and present Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio  resigned an MP on February 16.

The People's Democratic Alliance (PDA). led by Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP) has fielded former minister Tokheho Yepthomi as its candidate while NPF has nominated C Apok Jamir.

In Ampati, more than  28,000 voters are expected to exercise their franchise.

The  bypoll  was necessitated after sitting MLA Mukul Sangma vacated the seat and and Congress’s strength in the state Assembly came down to 20.

The Congress has fielded Mukul Sangma’s daughter Miani D Shira, who is contesting her maiden election, while  G Momin is the candidate for the ruling National People’s Party (NPP).
