3 killed, several go missing as jetty collapses in West Bengal, rescue ops on

Kolkata/Hooghly, Apr 26 (IBNS): At least three persons were killed and over 60 people went missing when a temporary jetty submerged in Hooghly river (Ganges) due to the high tide at Telenipara area under Bhadreswar Police Station limits on Wednesday, reports said.

According to reports, a high tide hit the temporary jetty at around 11 am. when around 70 people were waiting there for ferry.

More than 60 persons fell into water as the the jetty suddenly collapsed.

Locals and policemen from nearby Telenipara Police outpost had started primary rescue efforts and hours later, Kolkata Police's Disaster Management Group (DMG) personnel and an unit of National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) joined the operation.

A local police official said that three bodies have been recovered from the water while seven others were rescued alive and have been sent to a nearby hospital.

"Our rescue operation is on as at least 12 persons are still untraceable," the official added.

However, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has announced an ex-gratia of Rs. 2 lakh for the kin of those killed in the accident and a compensation of Rs. 25,000 for the injured.
