28 JNU students, including JNUSU president, detained after clash during protest against ABVP violence

The students intended to file an FIR over an earlier clash during a General Body Meeting on Dussehra, which they attribute to tensions between left- and right-wing student groups on campus, reported India Today.

According to students, the incident took place at JNU’s West Gate when police attempted to stop their march, sparking a confrontation.

Left-wing students said they were holding a peaceful protest against alleged violence by ABVP members and police inaction, claiming force was used to block their path.

Delhi police sources said the students had planned a protest at the Vasant Kunj police station without official permission.

When stopped at the university gate, a scuffle ensued, resulting in the detention of 28 students—19 males and 9 females, the report said.

Left-affiliated groups alleged that authorities have not taken sufficient action against ABVP-affiliated students following the earlier clash, which occurred during a general body meeting convened for JNUSU election committee formation.

They claim police have shown bias towards ABVP members, escalating campus unrest.

The confrontation followed the Dussehra incident, when left- and right-wing student groups clashed on campus.

The "Jai Bhim, Lal Salam" group led Saturday’s march before being detained.

During the general body meeting, left-affiliated students accused the ABVP of "hooliganism," while right-wing members complained of "regional hatred."

The All India Students' Association (AISA) said, "Yet again, ABVP's hooliganism and violence is disrupting democratic practices in JNU."

AISA further alleged, "ABVP hooligans began heckling councillors who were presenting their work reports and snatched a phone. When students began to question, they began beating students who were present in the GBM."
