250 additional ICU beds at DRDO hospital in Delhi by Saturday evening: Rajnath Singh amid Covid spike

New Delhi/UNI: Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Saturday said that the additional 250 ICU beds will be set up at DRDO's Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Covid hospital in Delhi Cantt by Saturday evening.

The addition will take the total number of beds at the facility to 500.

He also informed that Dhanwantari Covid hospital at Ahmedabad has been made operational.

Taking to Twitter, he said, "The @DRDO_India is adding another 250 beds later in the evening today at the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel COVID hospital in New Delhi, taking the total number of beds to 500. In Gujarat, a 1,000-bed hospital has become operational."

He also informed that work for setting up the Covid hospital at Lucknow has been progressing in full swing and that it will be operational by next week.

"Work is in full swing to establish a COVID facility in Lucknow that would become operational in the next 5-6 days.This hospital would be run by AFMS in coordination with the Uttar Pradesh Government," Singh tweeted.

The Defence Minister also said that all health facilities of Defence Public Sector Unit (DPSUs) and Ordnance Factory Board have been allowed to provide health services to local COVID-19 affected civilian population while the three Services are closely monitoring the progress of various initiatives taken by the Ministry.

On April 20, Mr Rajnath Singh, while reviewing the preparedness of Ministry and Armed Forces to deal with the recent spike in COVID-19 cases across the country, asked the Ministry to aid civil administration and directed the Armed Forces Medical Services (AFMS), Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) Defence Public Sector Undertakings (DPSUs), Ordnance Factory Board (OFB) and other organisations of Ministry of Defence such as National Cadet Corps (NCC) to provide support to the civil administration.
