2019 General Elections: Congress likely to go solo in Andhra Pradesh, West Bengal
New Delhi, Jan 24 (IBNS): Despite featuring in the mega 'United India' rally in Kolkata last week, Congress is likely to stay away from any alliance both in Andhra Pradesh and West Bengal to defeat the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the forthcoming General Elections.
The party announced that it will fight the Lok Sabha elections alone in Andhra Pradesh, a day after Telegu Desam Party (TDP) chief N Chandrababu Naidu met Congress president Rahul Gandhi.
The Congress will fight in all 25 Lok Sabha seats and 175 assembly seats in Andhra Pradesh.
Both the parties had unsuccessfully contested the recently concluded Telangana assembly polls in 2018.
In West Bengal, Congress' state unit, which is having an antagonistic terms with the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC), wants to go solo in the forthcoming General Elections.
Though the Congress had sent two emissaries to Mamata's rally, West Bengal is likely to witness no grand alliance in 2019.
Ten years ago, the Congress had successfully fought the Lok Sabha polls in an alliance with the TMC. Unnerving the Left Front for the first time in the eastern state, the alliance had won 26 out of 42 seats in West Bengal.
In Uttar Pradesh, the Samajwadi Party (SP) and Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) formed an alliance but kept the Congress out of it.
Saying the Congress is not intending "to play on a backfoot", Rahul on Wednesday appointed his sister Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and leader Jyotiraditya Scindia as the party chiefs in east and west Uttar Pradesh respectively.
