2 killed, several hurt in West Bengal bus mishap

Kolkata, Feb 12 (IBNS): At least two persons were killed and over 40 people were seriously injured when a luxury bus fell into a roadside ditch near Koipukur area under Amdanga Police Station limits in West Bengal's North 24 Parganas district on Sunday morning, reports said.

According to reports, the bus, which was going to Mayapur in Nadia district from North 24 Parganas' Duttapukur area, suddenly lost its control on National Highway 34 and overturned in a nearly 40-foot-deep roadside canal.

Several passengers of the bus were seriously hurt in the mishap and rushed to a nearby hospital, where two of them were declared dead.

As the conditions of two injured passengers deteriorated later, they have been shifted to R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata.

Following the accident, locals demonstrated at the area and blocked NH 34 for hours, disrupting traffic on the national highway.

When police reached the scene, locals pelted stones aiming at policemen and vandalized police vehicles.

Later a heavy police force rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control.

However, police have seized the bus, while its driver is still absconding.
