2 dead, 5 critical in firecracker unit blast in Andhra

Visakhapatnam, Mar 25 (UNI): At least two persons were killed and five others critically injured in an explosion at an illegal firecracker manufacturing unit at Gullepalli under Sabbavaram police station limits in this district on Monday.

It was the second explosion at the unit since 2012. In May 2012 incident, three persons were killed and two suffered injuries.

The explosion occurred early in the day when the victims were making the firecrackers.

All the seven persons in the unit were critically injured and shifted to King George Hospital in Vizag. Two of them succumbed to their injuries there.

The roof of the shed made of iron sheets caved in from the impact of the blast.

The deceased have been identified as Dasari Kotamam (22) and Singampalli Durga Rao (58).

The condition of the five injured - all from the same afamily - was stated to be critical.

Police have registered a case under Section 304 of IPC (culpable homicide not amounting to murder) and Section 3 and 5 of Explosives Substances Act against unit owner Dasari Satyanarayana.
