Kolhapur, Dec 18 (IBNS): As per the Supreme Court's recent order to ban sale of alcohol along all national and state highways, about 150 liquor shops will have to be closed, media reports said.

According to excise department officials quoted by the Times of India, in Kolhapur district there are 45 wine shops, 680 permit room bars, 355 beer shops and 285 country liquor shops.

Meanwhile, Kerala may have to close 115 liquor outlets.

"We are yet to receive any official instruction regarding this, but we have started gathering information about the liquor shops that are located on the state and national highways in the district," the TOI reported quoting an official of the excise department.

"As per the Supreme Court's order licences of the liquor shops that fall around 500 meter area from highways will not be renewed after expiring by March end. There are around 150 such shops located on the state and national highways. We have not yet received exact number of shops that will be shut down and are gathering information about it," said the official.
