14 people arrested in Assam over supporting Taliban on social media

Guwahati: At least 14 people, including three Maulanas and a student, have been arrested by the Assam police from across the state for alleged social media posts supporting the Taliban takeover of Afghanistan.

A senior police official said the arrests were made since Friday night and they have been charged under different sections of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, IT Act and CrPC.

Out of 14 arrested persons, two each from Karimganj, Kamrup (Rural), Barpeta and Dhubi districts and one each Darrang, Cachar, Hailakandi, South Salmara, Hojai and Goalpara districts.

The arrested persons were identified as Abu Bakkar Sidique, Saidul Hoque from Kamrup Rural, Mozidul Islam, Faruk Hussain Khan from Barpeta, Saiyad Ahmed, Arman Hussain from Dhubri, Mujib Uddin, Mortuza Hussain Khan from Karimganj, Maulana Fazul Karim from Darrang, Jawed Mazumder from Cachar, Nadim Akhtar from Hailakandi, Khandakar Nur Alom from South Salmara, Maulana Yaseen Khan from Goalpara and Maulana Basiruddin Laskar from Hojai district.

Special DGP GP Singh tweeted  - "@assampolice has arrested 14 persons for social media posts regarding Taliban activities that have attracted provisions of law of the land.People are advised to be careful in posts/likes etc on social media platforms to avoid penal action."
