13 killed, 25 injured as truck overturns on tempo carrying wedding guests in Maharashtra
At least 13 people were killed and over 25 others injured after a devastating road accident involving a container truck, a tempo carrying wedding guests, and a motorcycle on the Mumbai-Ahmedabad National Highway in Maharashtra's Palghar district on Tuesday, media reports said.
Officials said 11 victims died during treatment at Kasa Sub-District Hospital, while two others succumbed to injuries at Vedanta Hospital in Dahanu.
Wedding trip turns tragic
According to police, the passengers were travelling from Bapugaon in Dahanu to attend an engagement ceremony in Dhanivari when the accident occurred.
The tempo was reportedly carrying more than 40 passengers.
Tempo was allegedly on the wrong side
Initial investigations suggest the tempo driver had taken the wrong side of the highway, allegedly to avoid a detour of around one kilometre.
At around 4 pm, a container truck travelling from Gujarat towards Mumbai allegedly lost control near a village stretch and rammed into the tempo.
A motorcycle was also caught in the collision.
Truck overturned, passengers trapped
Police said the impact was so severe that the container truck overturned onto the tempo, trapping several passengers inside the mangled vehicle.
Rescue teams and local residents rushed to the spot to pull out the injured and shift them to nearby hospitals.
Authorities have launched an investigation into the accident.
