Ujjain/Khandwa: At least 13 people, including 10 children, lost their lives in two separate accidents during the immersion of Goddess Durga idols in Madhya Pradesh on Thursday.

Rescue operations are still underway, with one child reported missing.

In the first incident, a tractor-trolley carrying devotees in Ingoria, near Ujjain, plunged into the Chambal River after a 12-year-old boy allegedly switched on the ignition by mistake.

The vehicle, packed with children, lurched forward and broke through a railing before falling into the river.

Locals managed to rescue 11 children, but two of them died during treatment, while one child remains unaccounted for. Police, along with State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) teams, are searching the riverbank. A crane later lifted the submerged tractor-trolley out of the water.

In a separate accident in Pandhana tehsil of Khandwa district, a tractor-trolley carrying around 25 villagers from Ardla and Jamli villages overturned into a pond on its way for immersion rituals.

Authorities have so far recovered 11 bodies, including those of eight girls, while divers continue to search the pond. Witnesses said the vehicle appeared overloaded before it tipped over.

Chief Minister Mohan Yadav described the incidents as “extremely tragic” and announced ₹4 lakh ex-gratia compensation for the families of those killed. He also directed immediate medical care for the injured.

District officials confirmed that inquiries have been ordered into both incidents.
