12 TMC activists arrested for vandalizing police station near Kolkata
Kolkata, May 20 (IBNS): Police on Thursday midnight arrested twelve Trinamool Congress (TMC) activists, including a local councilor, for vandalizing a police station and attacking policemen at New Barrackpore area in West Bengal's North 24 Parganas, reports said.
According to reports, following the assembly election's result, several TMC activists attacked local CPI-M leader Manik Duttagupta's residence at Masunda Chanditala under North Dumdum assembly constituency area, where heavyweight TMC candidate and former Minister of State for Health, and Law and Judicial Affairs Chandrima Bhattacharya lost by 6549 votes to CPI-M's Tanmoy Bhattacharya, on Thursday evening.
A heavy police force from New Barrackpore Police Station rushed to the spot, resorted to laticharge to disperse attacking TMC activists and arrested two activists of the ruling party from the spot.
Later at night, demanding immediate release of two TMC activists, a large number of TMC supports, led by New Barrackpore city TMC president Sukhen Majumder and local TMC councilor of New Barrackpore Municipality Manoj Sarkar, gheraoed New Barrackpore Police Station.
When police confirmed that those TMC supporters would not be released, protesting TMC activists went on a rampage. They ransacked the police station, vandalized police vehicles and bikes and pelted stones aiming at the police station and police force.
Police resorted to lathicharge to bring the situation under control and arrested twelve TMC supporters, including Sukhen Majumder, Manoj Sarkar and local TMC's woman leader Neeta Dey.
The arrested TMC leader-activists were produced in a local court on Friday and sent to judicial custody for three days.
