Scores of protesters from the Bengali diaspora community in Toronto gathered at Queen’s Park  on Sunday (Sept 8) evening with placards, banners and resolve as they shouted slogans demanding justice for the rape and murder of the junior doctor at Kolkata's RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.

The agitationists of the Toronto chapter of the global protest over the gruesome crime gathered around 5 pm in the evening and formed a human chain. They performed and demanded safety of women and doctors in India and in West Bengal in particular.

In a statement the protesters said the rape and murder of the junior doctor at the seminar hall of the state-run RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata on Aug 9 have sent shockwaves across the globe.

"The victim was brutally raped and murdered with all the vicious intentions yet unknown. A civic volunteer was arrested in connection with the crime, but many questions remain unanswered from the ongoing investigation. It has been 30 days since the horrific incident and despite the Supreme Court taking charge of the case as Suo Moto, there have been no concrete developments in the investigation yet," they said.

"Often women are blamed for being assaulted and are expected to sacrifice freedom and opportunities in exchange for their safety. We stand in solidarity with the ongoing protest in Kolkata demanding justice for the deceased and raising our voice for women’s security," they said.

This is the Toronto chapter of the Global protest across 120+ cities in 19 countries.

The participants formed a human chain around Queen’s Park to symbolize unity and solidarity with the victim.

The protest included performances such as songs and recitations.
