Corruption case against ex-RG Kar Medical College head Sandip Ghosh amid CBI probe into doctor's rape-murder

Kolkata/IBNS: The Kolkata Police has registered a corruption case against Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of Kolkata's RG Kar Medical College and Hospital where the 31-year-old junior doctor was raped and murdered, media reports said.

The police will be probing into the financial irregularities in the hospital.

A Special Investigation Team (SIT) has been formed by police to probe into the financial irregularities during Dr. Ghosh's tenure.

Slamming the move, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) IT Cell head Amit Malviya posted on X, "Now, WB Govt constitutes a SIT to probe allegations of financial irregularities by Dr Sandeep Ghosh, the disgraced Principal of RG Kar Medical College & Hospital. 4 IPS officers are part of the SIT. How are police officers equipped to investigate financial crimes?

"This is nothing but Mamata Banerjee’s move to save Ghosh. WB Police will arrest Sandeep Ghosh, just in time, to stop CBI from taking him in custody. Unless Mamata Banerjee resigns, free and fair probe in the rape and murder of the lady doctor is not possible. She must resign now."

Dr. Ghosh, who came under massive fire from the protests who have gone into an indefinite strike demanding justice, was summoned for four consecutive days after the Central Bureau of Investigation took charge of the case as per the Calcutta High Court order.

Dr. Ghosh, who faced the ire for alleged mismanagement and financial irregularities at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, resigned from his post facing protests from the medical students.

Though he had resigned, the Mamata Banerjee government had controversially appointed him to a similar post at Calcutta National Medical College within a few hours.

The Calcutta High Court lashed out at the government's move and asked Dr. Ghosh to go on leave.

The trainee doctor was allegedly raped and murdered at the seminar hall of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, which is located in North Kolkata's Belgachia area.

One person, a civic volunteer, has been arrested in connection with the case but protesting students as well as the victim's parents suspect more people are involved in the case.
