| @indiablooms | Jun 24, 2024, at 04:01 pm

BJP MP Bhartruhari Mahtab on Monday took oath as the  Pro-Tem Speaker ahead of the beginning of the first session of the Indian Parliament.

Indian President Droupadi Murmu administered his oath to office.

About 280 MPs are expected to take oath in the Parliament on Monday.

The Pro-tem speaker, a temporary position, will be presiding over the proceedings of the first few days of the Parliament sessions till the new Speaker and Deputy Speaker are elected.

According to reports, the Lok Sabha Speaker will be elected on June 26.

Controversy

The Congress has slammed the Bharatiya Janata  Party over the appointment of seven-time MP Bhartruhari Mahtab to the post since they were expecting its MP Kodikunnil Suresh would be given the charge.

Suresh is an eight-time MP from Kerala.

Parliament begins amid paper leak row

The first session of the Indian Parliament is beginning amid alleged irregularities in competitive exams NEET and NET.

The opposition is expected to corner the government on the floor of the house over the issue.

This is the first session of the Parliament since the Lok Sabha election took place.

The BJP-led NDA returned to power for a third term after winning the polls, despite a much-improved show by the INDIA alliance, the key opposition front of the world's largest democracy.
