TMC conspired to stop Ram Navami celebration in West Bengal, says Narendra Modi

Indian PM Narendra Modi on Tuesday slammed the ruling Trinamool Congress Party of West Bengal and said it conspired to stop the Ram Navami celebration in the state.

"The entire nation will celebrate Ram Nabami tomorrow," he said while addressing a poll rally in Balurghat.

"This year Ram Navami, Bengali New Year and Nava Ratri are all special as for the first time these events are being observed after the consecration of Ram Temple in Ayodhya," he said.

"I know the TMC tried all means and conspired to stop the celebration in the state. However, it is truth which won in the end," he said.

Modi also referred to the Calcutta high court order that granted permission to the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) to hold a procession on Ram Navami in Howrah city in West Bengal.

Ram Navami celebration has emerged as a new battleground in the state between the BJP and the TMC.

Both parties have accused each other of violence.

India to vote in seven phases

India will vote in seven phases from April 19, to elect a new Lok Sabha (Lower House of the Indian Parliament).

The counting of votes will take place on June 4.

The election assumes significance as Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his government are trying to return to power for the third straight term, a rare incident in India’s political history.

In 2014, Modi led his saffron party to power by beating the Indian National Congress, a political outfit which sat in power for two straight terms under former PM Manmohan Singh.
