BJP fields Abhijit Das against TMC's Abhishek Banerjee in Lok Sabha polls

New Delhi/Kolkata/IBNS: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has named Abhijit Das (Bobby) as its candidate to take on West Bengal Chief Minister and Trinamool Congress (TMC) national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee in Diamond Harbour constituency in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.

The name was announced by the party on Tuesday.

Abhishek, who is taking the BJP head on, had earlier taken a dig at the saffron camp for the delay in fielding a candidate.

In a jibe at the BJP, Abhishek had said, "I think the best candidate for Diamond Harbour seat would be the ED director or CBI director or NIA director or if the Home Minister wants to contest himself, he can also come. No problem.

"Everyone has the right to contest from wherever they want. It's a democratic country."

The Lok Sabha elections will be held in seven phases in West Bengal from April 19 to June 1.

Diamond Harbour, which falls in the South 24 Parganas district, will enter into polls on June 1. The results will be declared on June 4.

Abhishek, the number two man in the TMC, won by mammoth margins for two consecutive terms in 2014 and 2019 Lok Sabha elections.
