Congress releases first list of 39 candidates for LS polls, Rahul Gandhi to contest from Wayanad

New Delhi/IBNS: The Congress released its first list of 39 candidates for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections on Friday, with Rahul Gandhi contesting from Wayanad in Kerala.

Addressing a press conference at the AICC headquarters here, party general secretary KC Venugopal said former Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel will contest from Rajnandgaon and Rajendra Sahu will contest from Durg.

Congress has fielded Shashi Tharoor from Thiruvananthapuram, KC Venugopal will be the party’s candidate from Alappuzha, and DK Suresh will contest from Bangalore Rural, Venugopal informed.

Out of 39 candidates, 15 are from the general category, and the remaining 24 are from SC, ST, OBC, and minority groups.

As many as 12 candidates are below 50 years old, while eight are in the age group of 50 to 60, twelve are in the age group of 61 to 70, and seven are between 71 and 76.

The list of 39 candidates is from the states of Chhattisgarh, Karnataka, Kerala, Lakshadweep, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Sikkim, Telangana, and Tripura.

The names have been announced primarily for some southern and northeastern states and the only outliers are Chhattisgarh and the Union Territory of Lakshadweep. At 16, the bulk of the candidates have been announced from Kerala, where the Congress is expected to leave the remaining four seats for its allies.
