President clears land ordinance reissued by government

IBNS | | 03 Apr 2015, 04:56 pm
New Delhi, Apr 3 (IBNS) President Pranab Mukherjee on Friday put his signature on the land acquisition ordinance, which was reissued last week after the Narendra Modi government failed to pass it in Parliament.

The ordinance seeks to make land purchase easier for industry and infrastructure development.

To reissue it, the government cut short the budget session in the Rajya Sabha.

Parliament is currently on a month-long recess after the Budget session that started on February 23.

The ordinance will now be presented in both houses of Parliament again.

The reissued ordinance includes nine changes made when a bill to replace it was passed in the Lok Sabha last month.

Since the bill doesn't stand a chance to get approval in the upper house where the ruling BJP is in the minority, the government has issued the ordinance again.

Describing the ordinance as "anti-farmer," a united opposition led by the Congress has vowed not to give it passage in parliament. The Congress has planed a massive farmers' rally in Delhi on April 19 to oppose the government's move.
