Myanmar conflict: India calls for cessation of violence through constructive dialogue

New Delhi/IBNS/UNI: India on Thursday raised concern over the ongoing situation in Myanmar, with rebels seeking to control the border with India in Mizoram, and sought a resolution through "constructive dialogue".

Addressing the weekly press conference, External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Arindam Bagchi said, "India is concerned with such incidents close to the border, and New Delhi's position on the ongoing situation in Myanmar is clear."

Bagchi said India wants cessation of the violence and resolution of the situation through constructive dialogue and calls for the return of peace, stability, and democracy in Myanmar.

"Since the current conflict started, a large number of Myanmar citizens have been taking refuge in India and the local authorities in the concerned neighboring states have been handling the situation appropriately on humanitarian grounds," he said.

"India has also been facilitating the return of those who wish to go back to that country," he added.

A civil war has been raging in Myanmar following a military coup in February 2021. The fighting between the country’s Army and pro-democracy groups intensified close to the Mizoram border a few days ago.

Over the issue of the Israel-Hamas conflict, the External Affairs Ministry said," India has always underlined the need for humanitarian law and civilian casualties to be avoided in the Israel-Hamas conflict."

Replying to a media query, Bagchi said India has always underlined the need for humanitarian relief and de-escalation of tension. "India has sent 38 tonnes of relief material and is looking to send more assistance".

As the Hamaas-Israel War enters Day 41, the UN Security Council has adopted a Malta-led resolution calling for a humanitarian pause and ceasefire in Gaza. Israel, however, continuing its stance of "no ceasefire", has rejected the UNSC Resolution.

The Council “calls for the immediate and unconditional release of all hostages held by Hamas and other groups, especially children, as well as ensuring immediate humanitarian access”, by the terms of the resolution.

The resolution, however, does not condemn the Hamas attacks of 7 October which began the current wave of violence and battle for control of Gaza. The Council also rejected an amendment proposed by Russia.
