Jadavpur University incident: Kolkata Police summons Dean Rajat Roy again

Kolkata/UNI: The Kolkata Police on Thursday summoned again trouble-torn Jadavpur University's Dean of Students Rajat Roy to appear at its headquarters- Lalbazar- before the investigation officials after he failed to attend the first summon owing to confinement to his chamber by a group of students, who gheraoed him since Wednesday noon, official sources said.

Roy, who is still under siege in the campus, informed the police that he failed to attend the summon at 3 pm on Wednesday as he was prevented from getting out of his chamber after being gheraoed by a group of students, who allegedly demanded his resignation.

The students blamed the Dean for the alleged ragging case that led to the death of a first year undergraduate student on his 3rd day in the campus.

The eighteen-year-old newcomer, a student of Bengali (Honours), who allegedly fell fatally from the 2nd floor in the hostel on August 9 night succumbed on the following morning at a city hospital.

JU Registrar Sneha Manju Basu, along with another varsity official, had attended before the Kolkata Police headquarters as scheduled.

The Joint CP Crime, Shankha Shubhra Chakrabarty, who is heading the investigation, wanted the documents from the Dean of Students about the details of the administration as well as a list of former students, who are allegedly staying in the hostels illegally.

The anti-crime wing of Kolkata Police arrested altogether nine accused present and former students in the alleged crime, with six more suspects on Tuesday night.

The latest arrested accused were Md. Arif, a third-year Civil Engineering student from J&K, Md. Asif Azmal, a fourth-year Electrical Engineering student, Ankan Sarkar, another third-year Civil Engineering student, Saptak

Kamilya an ex-student of Environmental Science, Asit Sardar, an ex-student of the Sanskrit Department and Suman Naskar.

All have been sent to 12-day police custody by a local court on Wednesday.
