Kolkata: The Kolkata Police have registered an FIR against 'unknown' persons on the basis of a complaint filed by the father of Jadavpur University student Swapnadip Kundu, who reportedly died after falling from the university's main hostel's balcony on Thursday.

The Bengali Honours student had taken admission to the university recently.

Mystery surrounded his death after his family members alleged that he was being ragged.

Police have registered the FIR under section 302 of the IPC.

A senior city police official told IBNS, "An investigation has been initiated into the incident. 10-15 resident students of the hostel, from where the student reportedly fell and died, have been questioned."

"Everyone is cooperating with the probe. None has been either detained or arrested yet," the official said.

Kundu died in KPC Medical College on Thursday where he was taken after some students found he was lying in a pool of blood below the hostel building.

Police said no suicide note was found in the room of the student.

A resident of Nadia district, which is about 120 km from Kolkata, the student had told his parents about facing problems in the hostel, reports Hindustan Times.

Kundu's mother said her son was 'excited' after getting a chance to study in Jadavpur University.

“He was so excited when his name appeared on the merit list of Jadavpur University. He immediately decided to quit the college in Bogula, where he had started attending classes. For him, the name of the institution mattered most. It was like dream come true,” Swapnadeep Kundu’s mother Swapna told The Telegraph.

Around two hours before that, Swapnadeep had called his mother and said he was “very scared” and requested her to take her back home, the newspaper reported.
