New Delhi/IBNS: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been invited to address a joint session of the US Congress on June 22, during his state visit to that country.

“On behalf of the bipartisan leadership of the United States House of Representatives and the United States Senate, it is our honour to invite you to address a joint meeting of Congress on Thursday, June 22," the invitation to PM Modi says.

The letter is signed by House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, Senate Majority Leader Charles Schumer, Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell, and House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries.

"Your historic address to a Joint Meeting of Congress seven years ago left a lasting impression and greatly deepened the friendship between the United States and India,” the letter said.

The lawmakers also said that the “shared values and commitment to global peace and prosperity” of the two countries is the basis on which the bilateral partnership continues to grow.

They said that during his address PM Modi will have an opportunity to share his vision for India’s future and also speak of the global challenges that both nations face.

“We look forward to continuing to work together to build a brighter future for our countries and for the world,” the letter said.

US House Speaker Kevin McCarthy in a tweet said: “It is my honor to invite @PMOIndia@narendramodi to address a Joint Meeting of Congress on Thursday, June 22nd.  This will be an opportunity to celebrate the enduring friendship between the United States and India and speak to the global challenges our countries both face.”

PM Modi will be in Washington on June 22-23.
