Mumbai/IBNS: Popular Indian singer Sonu Nigam was manhandled and his aide was thrown off the stage after a scuffle over selfies broke out at a music festival in Mumbai on Monday, media reports said.

The scuffle broke out after Sonu Nigam was coming down the stage after his live performance at 11 pm in Chembur.

Sonu Nigam was stopped by a person, later identified as Shiv Sena (Uddhav Thackeray faction) MLA Prakash Phaterpekar's son Swapnil, from behind when he was climbing down the stage.

When he was moved aside by two people who were accompanying the singer, Sonu Nigam was pushed by the person.

Sonu Nigam's aide was thrown off the stage. The aide suffered minor injuries.

Narrating the experience in front of the reporters, the singer said, "I fell on the steps after I was pushed. Rabbani (Khan), who came to my rescue, was pushed from behind. He could have died.

"I filed a complaint because people must think about it when they force someone to take a selfie."

Swapnil Phaterpekar's name has been mentioned in Sonu Nigam's complaint.

However, police denied any political angle to the case.

Slamming former Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray over the incident, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla tweeted, "Not the first time such an incident has come to the fore! Earlier a veteran was beaten up! SHAMEFUL ! Will UT faction condemn it?"
