New Delhi: Congress MP Rahul Gandhi on Monday launched a blistering attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi over the Adani Group issue and asserted that the latter will "try his best" to not allow a discussion over the same in the Parliament.

"I have been saying about 'Hum Do, Hamare Do' since last few years. The government is 'scared' and doesn't want a discussion on Adani ji in Parliament," the former Congress president told reporters on the sidelines of an event at the Constitution Club here, referring to Opposition's demand to allow discussion in Parliament over Adani issue.

The Congress MP from Wayanad has been accusing the Modi of favouring a select few industrialists since it came to power in 2014.

"Modi ji will try his best to not allow discussion over Adani ji in Parliament. Everyone knows the reason," he said.

The MP added, "I have been raising this issue since last few years. This is a corruption of lakhs of crores rupees. There shoud be a discussion over this issue."

"People of the country should know which power is behind Adani ji and everything should be crystal clear ," the parliamentarian said.

Both Houses of Parliament were adjourned for the day on Monday, amid protests by Opposition over the Adani issue.

Echoing a similar sentiment, senior Congress leader Digvijaya Singh accused the ruling BJP of shielding Adani.

"We want an answer from the PM Narendra Modi ji over this issue. We (Opposition) will not step back till Narendra Modi ji agrees for the discussion. There shoud be a discussion in House over the matter," he told reporters at a joint press conference here.

Earlier in the day, the Opposition MPs including Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge staged a protest in front of the Gandhi statue in Parliament House, reiterating its demand to the Centre to either constitute a Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) or set up an inquiry under the Chief Justice of Supreme Court to look into the Hindenburg Research report, which alleged that Adani Group had engaged in stock manipulation and accounting fraud scheme over the course of decades.

The MPs holding banner and placards shouted slogans against the Narendra Modi-led government over the issue.

A meeting of the Opposition parties was also held at the office of Kharge in Parliament building over the same.
