Shillong/UNI: West Bengal Chief Minister and Trinamool Congress supremo Mamata Banerjee will launch her election campaign on Wednesday in the Garo Hills region, which is considered the heartland of the Congress, in Meghalaya.

Banerjee who will be accompanied by her party's National General Secretary Abhishek Banerjee and Leader of Trinamool Parliamentary Party in Rajya Sabha Derek O’Brien will address a rally at Dilma Apal Playground under Mendipathar assembly constituency in North Garo Hills district.

It is interesting to note here that the Trinamool chairperson decided to launch the campaign from the Mendipathar constituency, which was represented by her party legislator Marthon Sangma, who had recently joined the ruling National People’s Party.

The Conrad Sangma-led NPP had declared Marthon as the party candidate for the upcoming assembly elections.

During her visit to Meghalaya’s capital Shillong in December last year, Banerjee had launched Meghalaya TMC’s unique financial assistance scheme for women – WE Card – which has garnered over 3.14 lakh registrations so far.

The TMC which did not contest a single seat in the 2018 Meghalaya assembly election became the main opposition party in the state in November, 2020, after 12 of the 17 Congress legislators, led by former Chief Minister Mukul Sangma and political heavyweights such as former assembly speaker Charles Pyngrope and George Lyngdoh, joined its fold.
