Congress turncoat Patidar leader Hardik Patel and national cricketer Ravindra Jadeja's wife Rivaba Jadeja will contest the upcoming Gujarat assembly elections on tickets of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

The names of Hardik and Rivaba featured in the ruling party's first list of candidates (160 in 180-member assembly), which was unveiled by Union Minister and BJP leader Bhupendra Yadav on Thursday.

Hardik and Rivaba will contest from Viramgram and Jamnagar North constituencies respectively.

The BJP, which has been ruling the state for 27 years, has dropped 38 sitting MLAs including the one in Morbi where a bridge collapse claimed over 140 lives two weeks ago.

The former MLA, who had reportedly jumped into the river to save some lives after the bridge collapse, has been named as the BJP candidate from Morbi.

Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel will fight from Ghatlodia.

Along with the Congress, the BJP faces a contest from the spirited Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in this elections, which will be held in two phases on Dec 1 and 5.

The results will be declared on Dec 8.
