Centre cancels foreign contribution licence of Rajiv Gandhi Foundation: Report

India Blooms News Service | @indiablooms | 23 Oct 2022, 12:18 pm

The Centre has cancelled the Foreign Contribution Regulation Act (FCRA) licence of the Rajiv Gandhi Foundation (RGF) and the Rajiv Gandhi Charitable Trust (RGCT), non-government organisations linked to the Gandhi family, over alleged irregularities in foreign contributions, according to media reports.

NDTV reported citing sources that the alleged irregularities in RGF and RGCT are likely to be handed over to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).

The action follows a probe initiated by an inter-ministerial committee formed by the Home Ministry in 2020 to probe alleged irregularities in NGOs run by the Gandhi family.

According to RGF's website, it has worked on a number of critical issues including health, science and technology, women and children, disability support, etc., since its inception in 1991 till 2009. It also worked in the education sector, the website says.

Former Congress President Sonia Gandhi heads the RGF and RGCT.

RGF's other prominent members are former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Congress MP Rahul Gandhi, Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, and former union Minister P Chidambaram.

Rahul Gandhi and former Rajya Sabha MP Dr Ashok S. Ganguly are members of RGCT among others.
