Mumbai Police on Friday issued a notice making seat belts mandatory for all passengers, both in front and rear seats, travelling in four-wheelers from November 1.

“All motor vehicle drivers and all commuters in vehicles, whoever travels on the roads of Mumbai City are hereby informed that it will be mandatory for drivers and all passengers to wear seat belts while travelling from November 1,” the Mumbai Police said in a statement.

Violators of the new rule will be liable for punishment under the relevant sections of the Motor Vehicles (Amendment) Act, 2019.

In the notice, the Mumbai Police directed that four-wheelers that do not have seat belts for all passengers should get them installed by November 1.

Last month, Union Minister of Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari announced that seatbelts will be mandatory for all passengers sitting in a vehicle.

"It will now be mandatory for all the people sitting in the car to wear a seat belt," the Union Minister said.

Gadkari's announcement came after the fatal accident of former Tata Group chairman Cyrus Mistry, which had sparked criticism over the flaws in the transport and traffic control system, including laws governing seat belts for car passengers.
