Congress to oppose Modi govt's bill for bank privatisation

New Delhi/UNI: Congress has said that it will oppose the government's move to privatise the nationalised banks and hand them over to their "chosen capitalist friends".

Head of the Congress's communication department, Jairam Ramesh said that the NDA government at the centre under its policy of privatisation has been trying to hand over each and every government property created for the benefit of the people to its corporate friends and claimed that this policy will be disastrous for the country.

He further warned that if the nationalised banks are privatised and sold to private entities, it will prove fatal for the country.

Ramesh tweeted that, "On this day, 53 years ago, banks were nationalized. This was a transformational change. The Modi government only wants to privatize state-owned banks under the 'Sell India' project to a select few people.

"Selling banks would be disastrous for the country. Congress will oppose any bill aimed at selling public sector banks to private players."
