New Delhi/IBNS: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP Varun Gandhi on Sunday informed that he has tested positive for COVID-19 with "fairly strong symptoms".

The BJP leader said that he contracted the infection during a visit to Pilibhit, his Lok Sabha constituency.

He also appealed to the Election Commission to extend precautionary doses to candidates and political workers involved in the assembly elections that will be held in five states next month.

"After being in Pilibhit for 3 days, I have tested positive for COVID with fairly strong symptoms. We are now in the middle of a third wave and an election campaign. The Election Commission should extend precautionary doses to candidates and political workers as well," Gandhi tweeted.

Uttar Pradesh will vote in seven phases from Feb 10 to Mar 7 to elect a new Assembly, the Election Commission of India said on Saturday.

The elections in Uttar Pradesh will take place on Feb 10, 14 , 20, 23, 27, Mar 3 and 7.

Manipur will go to the polls on February 27 and March 3. Goa, Uttarakhand and Punjab will vote on Feb 14.
