Anti-conversion bill tabled in Karnataka Assembly despite pandemonium

Belagavi/UNI: A day after the state cabinet approved the anti-conversion bill, the Karnataka government here on Tuesday tabled it in the assembly amidst pandemonium where the House witnessed KPCC President DK Shivakumar tearing it.

Speaker Vishweshwar Hegde Kageri said the bill will be taken up for discussion tomorrow.

Soon after the bill was introduced, Shivakumar termed it as unconstitutional and tore it on the floor of the House. Fueling the pandemonium, Opposition Siddaramaiah alleged that the bill was tabled stealthily without much discussion.

As many as seven states have brought in similar laws including Arunachal Pradesh, Gujarat, Odisha, Himachal Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh and Uttarakhand.

Last week, the Christian community held a Congress-backed protest in front of Suvarna Soudha against the bill.

The Congress is vehemently opposing the bill and have decided to restrict the state government from passing it. JDS also has decided to oppose it.

The BJP government is optimistic of passing the bill, but it does not have a majority in the upper house.
