Bengal Guv Dhankhar questions allocation of funds to Maa Canteen, seeks information; TMC hits back

Kolkata/IBNS: Triggering a fresh faceoff with the West Bengal government, Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar on Saturday questioned the allocation of funds to "Maa Canteen", a community kitchen which was launched by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee ahead of the 2021 assembly elections.

Dhankhar has raised questions on the money spent for the community kitchen from February to March-end as the Banerjee government has allocated Rs. 100 crore fund for the scheme for Apr 1, 2021 to Mar 31, 2022 period.

The Governor has sought the information from the principal secretary, finance department within a week.

"... It has been represented, as also gathered from public domain that the Hon'ble Chief Minister launched the 'Maa' canteens for providing subsidized cooking meals for the poor and the destitute at a nominal cost of Rs. 5, in mid-February, 2021," Dhankhar said.

"It is, thus, apparent that for about a month and half prior to April 1, 2021, the scheme was functional and during this period there was no legitimate allocation to this effect," he alleged.

Slamming the Governor for "interfering" into the state's work, ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Saugata Roy told India Blooms, "He says all the irrelevant things... Whatever money the government spent will be audited by the CAG office and the government is only responsible to the assembly. The government does not function under the Governor."
