Manipur ambush: Assam Rifles CO and family among 7 dead, Rajnat Singh describes incident as 'cowardly'

Imphal/UNI/IBNS: The Commanding Officer of the 46Assam Rifles, his family and three other jawans, were killed on Saturday in an ambush by suspected militants in Churachandpur, Manipur, police said.

Indian Defence Minister Rajnath Singh condemned the incident and described the incident as 'cowardly'.

"The cowardly attack on an Assam Rifles convoy in Churachandpur, Manipur is extremely painful & condemnable. The nation has lost 5 brave soldiers including CO 46 AR and two family members," Singh tweeted.

"My condolences to the bereaved families. The perpetrators will be brought to justice soon," he said.

The incident took place near Myanmar border in Churachandpur district at around 10 am, media reports said.

A convoy of the Assam Rifles was ambushed by a group of terrorists when the senior official died.

Reacting to the incident, Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh tweeted, "Strongly condemn the cowardly attack on a convoy of 46 AR which has reportedly killed few personnel including the CO & his family at CCpur today. The State forces & Para military are already on their job to track down the militants. The perpetrators will be brought to justice."

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee tweeted: "I strongly condemn the dastardly attack by militants on a convoy of 46 Assam Rifles in Manipur. It pains me to learn that we have lost five brave soldiers, including the CO & his family members. Heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families. The entire nation awaits justice!"
