Farmer groups call for renewed protest at Delhi borders before Supreme Court order

Chandigarh/IBNS: Farmer groups protesting against the three central farm laws have called in for a renewal of agitation ahead of a key Supreme Court hearing this week.

Farmers' leaders have urged more protesters to join the movement at the Delhi borders from Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh and other states.

The Supreme Court earlier this month lashed out at the farmers, who are protesting against three contentious farm laws, saying they have "strangulated" the national capital.

The apex court had said it would examine this Thursday if the right to protest was absolute and also go into whether farmers have the right to take to the streets.

The new laws, enacted by the Modi government, will facilitate the farmers to sell their produce beyond the government-regulated wholesale market.

However, farmers fear the laws would leave them at the mercy of big corporate houses.

Farmers mainly from Uttar Pradesh, Punjab and Haryana have camped along the borders of the national capital since Nov 26, 2020, protesting against the agricultural reforms.

After several rounds of talks, the government had agreed upon postponing the implementation of the laws while the protesters demanded the repeal of the laws.
