Supreme Court pulls up farmers protesting against three farm laws

New Delhi/IBNS: The Supreme Court Friday lashed out at the farmers, who are protesting against three contentious farm laws, saying they have "strangulated" the national capital, media reports said.

The top court said this as Kisan Mahapanchayat, a farmers body, sought permission to hold Satyagraha at Jantar Mantar, which is the designated protesting site in Delhi.

"You have strangulated the entire city, now you want to come inside the city. The residents around, are they happy with the protest? This business should stop," the court said as quoted by NDTV.

The new laws, enacted by the Modi government, will facilitate the farmers to sell their produce beyond the government-regulated wholesale market.

However, farmers fear the laws would leave them at the mercy of big corporate houses.

Farmers mainly from Uttar Pradesh, Punjab and Haryana have camped along the borders of the national capital since Nov 26, 2020, protesting against the agricultural reforms.

After several rounds of talks, the government had agreed upon postponing the implementation of the laws while the protesters demanded the repeal of the laws.
