Kolkata/IBNS: Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Sushmita Dev was elected to Parliament’s upper house Rajya Sabha unopposed from West Bengal Monday.

No other party from West Bengal had fielded a candidate for the Rajya Sabha bypoll, which was a cakewalk for the TMC.

After her win, Dev tweeted, “Thank my leader @mamataofficial for giving me the opportunity to be a member of the Rajya Sabha from Bengal.

“It’s an honour for me,I believe I am the first from Assam/North East to be in RS from Bengal. I will continue to work for the people & their greater interest.”

Dev, a former MP from Assam’s Silchar, joined the TMC last month after quitting the Congress.

She was seen actively working towards building the TMC’s organisation in Tripura where the party is aiming to keep its footprint.

In her first press conference as a TMC member, Dev had said, "I have joined the TMC without any conditions whatsoever. It is because when a new relationship is built, it can be fostered only on trust and I have complete faith in Mamata Didi."

Dev, the daughter of veteran Bengali Congress leader Santosh Mohan Dev, was an MLA from Silchar between 2011 and 2014 and she was elected to the Lok Sabha in 2014.
