Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee files nomination as TMC candidate from Bhabanipur

Kolkata/IBNS: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee Friday filed her nomination as a Trinamool Congress (TMC) candidate from Bhabanipur assembly constituency for the upcoming bypoll in the seat.

She filed her nomination at Alipore Survey Building.

The bypoll, which will be held on Sept 30, was necessitated following the resignation of West Bengal Minister and TMC leader Sovandeb Chattopadhyay.

Chattopadhyay resigned to pave way for Banerjee to contest and get elected to the assembly after she was defeated by Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)'s Suvendu Adhikari in Nandigram.

Though the Nandigram result has been challenged by Banerjee in the court, she has plunged into election again to remain in the Chief Minister's post.

While the BJP has fielded lawyer Priyanka Tibrewal against Banerjee, the Left Front has nominated CPI-M leader and lawyer Srijib Biswas as its candidate against the TMC supremo.

The Congress, which had contested the 2021 assembly polls in an alliance with the Left, has decided not to field a candidate against Banerjee, whose equation with the grand old party has shown signs of improvement of late in the run up to the 2024 General Elections.

The poll result will be declared on Oct 3.
