Guwahati/IBNS: The lone Hindu MLA of Badruddin Ajmal-led All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) has resigned from the party and joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) party on Wednesday.

Before joining the BJP party, AIUDF MLA of Bhabanipur constituency Phani Talukdar had resigned from the membership of Assam Legislative Assembly and tendered his resignation from the member of the Assam Legislative Assembly to assembly speaker Biswajit Daimary.

Phani Talukdar had joined BJP in presence of Assam state BJP president Bhabesh Kalita, few ministers and party MPs, MLAs in Guwahati on Wednesday.

He had resigned from the AIUDF party on Tuesday and sent his resignation letter to AIUDF chief Badruddin Ajmal.

Talukdar said that, he joined BJP only for development in his constituency.

“Before elections along with other people I also thought that Congress, AIUDF led Mahajot will form the government in Assam. But it didn’t happen. I was elected as a MLA from the AIUDF party. I joined BJP only for development in my constituency,” Phani Talukdar said.

Talukdar also met Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma at his official residence in Guwahati.

AIUDF’s strength in the Assam assembly has now reduced to 15.

Earlier, two elected Congress MLAs – Rupjyoti Kurmi and Sushanta Borgohain had resigned from the party and joined BJP.
