New Delhi/Washington/IBNS: Amid the mayhem in Afghanistan that occurred after Taliban captured power, Indian External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar spoke to US Secretary of State Antony Blinken to discuss the recent development in the war-torn country.

Jaishankar said he expressed the "urgency of restoring airport operations in Kabul".

The Minister tweeted, "Discussed latest developments in Afghanistan with @SecBlinken. Underlined the urgency of restoring airport operations in Kabul. Deeply appreciate the American efforts underway in this regard."

He also said in a separate tweet, "We are in constant touch with the Sikh and Hindu community leaders in Kabul. Their welfare will get our priority attention."

The United States said the evacuation flights from Kabul resumed on Monday evening, hours after being delayed.

Despite earning criticism for the withdrawal of his country's troops from Afghanistan, US President Joe Biden in an address Monday stated his country's mission was never supposed to be nation building in Afghanistan and that he "stands squarely behind his decision."

"Our mission in Afghanistan was never supposed to have been nation building.  It was never supposed to be creating a unified, centralized democracy," Biden said.

As the Taliban entered Kabul and took over control of Afghanistan, an unprecedented situation unfolded in the war-torn nation.
