Navjot Singh Sidhu replaces Sunil Jakhar as new Punjab Congress chief

New Delhi/UNI: Indian National Congress (INC) president Sonia Gandhi on Sunday night appointed former Punjab Minister Navjot Singh Sidhu as the new head of Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC).

Navjot will replace Sunil Jakhar.

"The party appreciates the contributions of outgoing PCC President Shri Sunil Jakhar," an official statement said.

The INC also appointed Sangat Singh Gilzan, Sukhwinder Singh Danny, Pawan Goel and Kuljit Singh Nagra as the working president of the PCC.

Nagra was relieved from the responsibility in charge of Sikkim, Nagaland and Tripura.

The development comes against the factionalism in the Punjab Congress between the camps of Sidhu and Captain Amarinder Singh.

Sidhu has repeatedly questioned Capt Amarinder's style of working and holds him guilty of not solving the sacrilege case.

On the other hand, Capt Amarinder has accused Singh of not toeing the party lines.

Sidhu was dropped from Local Bodies portfolio in 2019 by Capt Amarinder.

The party wanted to unite the Punjab Congress by accommodating both the leaders as Punjab Assembly polls are coming.

The Congress has reasserted that the upcoming polls will be contested under the leadership of Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh.
