Srinagar/UNI: A militant was killed and a CRPF officer was injured on Monday in an encounter which ensued after security forces launched a Cordon and Search Operation (CASO) on the outskirts of Srinagar.

Earlier, a top commander of Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) Nadeem Abrar was arrested at Parimpora, about a km from the encounter site.

Official sources said that following specific information about presence of militants in a residential house at Maloora on Srinagar-Bandipora road, troops of Rashtriya Rifles (RR), Special Operation Group (SOG) of Jammu and Kashmir police and CRPF launched a joint CASO this afternoon.

However, when the troops were moving towards a particular place, they came under heavy fire from militants hiding in the house. 'The security forces retaliated ensuing in an encounter,' they said, adding a militant was killed in the exchange of fire while a CRPF Sub Inspector (SI) was injured.

They said the injured has been hospitalised. 'All roads leading to the encounter spot have been closed. Additional security forces have been deployed in the adjoining area to prevent any law and order problem,' they said.

A resident Reyaz Ahmad told UNI over the phone that heavy firing was going on in the area.
