Selvam elected Speaker of Puducherry assembly

Puducherry/UNI: R Selvam, known as Embalam Selvam, was elected as the Speaker of Puducherry Legislative Assembly on Wednesday.

Protem Speaker K Lakshminarayanan, who was in the Chair, announced that Mr Selvam was elected 'unopposed'.

Born on November 11, 1964 in Embalam, a panchayat village in Nettapakkam Commune in the Union Territory of Puducherry, Mr Selvam engaged himself in social services right from his young age.

He was the lone candidate, who had filed the nomination papers for the Speaker post on Monday on behalf of the BJP-N R Congress Alliance.

Following his election, Chief Minister N Rangaswamy and leader of the opposition R Siva escorted him to the Speaker’s Chair.

Later, a few members including the Chief Minister greeted Mr Selvam.

Selvam was elected from Manvely Assembly Constituency on BJP ticket in the April 6 election.

Earlier, he was the President of the Embalam Co-operative Milk Producers Union and Puducherry People’s Movement, Vice-president of the Puducherry Olympics Association and General Secretary of the Puducherry unit of the BJP.
